Operation Brevity by David Pentland. (PC) Libya, North Africa, 15th May 1941. British Cruiser Mark II (A10) tanks of 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, 7th Armoured Brigade pause during General Wavell's offensive against the Italian held Halfaya Pass and Fort Capuzzo. Led by General 'Straffer' Gott the attack was initially a success, but counter attacks by German reinforcements halted the British offensive after one day, and pushed it back to the Egyptian border. |

Blair Paddy Mayne, and men of L detachment SAS, stop to discuss their location en route to Sidi Haneish airfield. The raid was a major victory, especially for the newly acquired jeeps, which played an important part in the destruction of some 40 enemy aircraft for the loss of one man. |

Vickers heavy machinegun team of the British 3rd Division, Monty's Ironsides, in action against the German strong points Morris and Hillman. The division comprised of the 2nd East Yorkshires, 1st South Lancashires, 1st Suffolks, 2nd Lincolnshires, 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers, 2nd Royal Ulster Rifles, 2nd Warwickshires, 1st Norfolks, and 2nd King's Shropshire Light Infantry. |
After Kasserine by David Pentland (PC) M3 Lee tanks of D Company, 2-13th Regiment, US 1st Armoured Division, Thala, Tunisia, 22nd February 1943. Following the disaster for the US Army at Kasserine at the hands of Field Marshal Rommel, the Axis forces were eventually stopped by the remnants of the US 2nd and 3rd Battalions, 13th Armoured Regiment 1st Armoured Division at Thala. After the battle Rommel singled out the 2nd battalion for their stubborn and clever defence of Sbeitla. |

Counter Attack at Konigsberg by David Pentland (PC) German forces encircled in the fortress town of Konigsberg by 3rd Ukranian front prepare to break through the besieging Soviet lines to re-establish a supply line to the Baltic. Here some Stug III assault guns move up to their assembly area next to the towns World War One memorial. From here the attack was launched on February 18th 1945 and successfully opened a supply corridor which remained in place until 8th April. |

A Buzz for Beamont by David Pentland (PC) Wing Commander Roland Beaumont in his personal Tempest V, intercepted and downed his first V1 Buzzbomb on the night of June 22nd, 1944, over south east England. As Commander of 150 wing and others he went on to shoot down a total of 30 V1 flying bombs, 8 enemy aircraft and 35 locomotives destroyed plus one minesweeper sunk. |

Zemke's First Fan by David Pentland. (PC) On the 12th of May 1944, Col. Hubert Zemke tried his new fan tactic, designed to engage Luftwaffe fighters. Unfortunately on this occasion his aircraft was bounced by German ace Major Gunther Rall in his ME109 G-6AS, and escaped only by sending his P47-D Thunderbolt into a gut wrenching dive. |
Preparing for the Day, the Reichswald, February 1945 by David Pentland (PC) Sturmtigers of Sturmmorser Company 1002, commanded by Lieutenant Zippel, take on ammunition in preparation for the battle to come. These fearsome monsters 38cm rocket projectors could penetrate up to 2.5m of reinforced concrete. Luckily for the Allies only 18 were completed by the wars end. |
Boots on the Ground by David Pentland. (PC) Helmand Province, Afghanistan 2012. CH-53D Sea Stallion's of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing deploy US Marines for assault on Taliban positions. The heavy lift helicopter first flew in 1964, and carried out its last operational flights supporting the US Marines during 'Operation Enduring Freedom' in early 2012. |
Opening Gambit, Poland, 2nd September 1939 by David Pentland. (PC) Porucznik Stanislaw Skalski of 142nd Eskrada, flying a Polish airforce PZL P-11c, downs a Messerschmitt 110 during the first days of WWII. Although officially credited as a Dornier bomber, it is now believed that the aircraft was an Me110 from 1/ZG1. The discrepancy is attributed to the fact that the reported aircraft used nose mounted cannons unlike the Dornier, and up until then the 110 was a well kept secret. |
Dawn Descent by David Pentland (PC) A C130 Hercules MK1 from RAF Lynham Transport Wing, delivers a low level Brigade drop of Airbourne forces over Salisbury Plain. The C130 Hercules is the workhorse of the Royal Air Force Air Transport (AT) fleet and is based at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, where it is operated by Nos 24, 30, 47 and 70 Squadrons. The fleet totals 50 aircraft and is a mixture of C1/C3 aircraft and the new C-130J aircraft, designated C4/C5. |

Enemy Ahead by David Pentland. (PC) North Africa, 18th November 1941. Italian Autoblinda armoured cars of Gen. Gambara's XX Mobile Corps trade shots with forward reconnaissance elements of the British 22nd Armoured Brigade, during the initial hours of Operation Crusader. Their quick withdrawal to report their contact would give the Italian main force a timely warning of the unexpected attack. |
