Junior Paramore playing for Samoa against Wales by David Pentland. Junior Paramore had a long international rugby union career with Samoa, competing in three world cups, in 1991, 1995 and 1999. One of the highlights was the 38 - 31 win against Wales at a near capacity Millennium Stadium, Cardiff in the 1999 World Cup. In the painting, Junior Paramore is carrying the ball into contact with Wales No.6 Martyn Williams. |
David and Goliath, Vernon, France, 27th August 1944 by David Pentland. Leading 30th Corps assault across the Seine at Vernon, 43rd Wessex Division gained an initial foothold on the east bank. Heroic efforts however by the Royal Engineers of 71st, 72nd and 73rd Field Companies, succeeded in constructing a Class 9 Bailey bridge (David, shown left) and a Second Class 40 bridge (Goliath, shown right) Despite constant enemy fire this amazing feat was achieved in only 2 days, and allowed 15/19th Hussars Cromwells and 4.7th Dragoons Guards Shermans to cross just in time to repulse a serious German counter attack by Tiger IIs of SS Panzer Abteilung 101. |

Original Pencil Sketch for Assault on Courcellette, The Somme, 15th September 1916 by David Pentland. (P) The village of Courcellette dominated the Somme battlefield, and it was the Canadian Corps who were given the task of taking the strongpoint. They were however aided by a new weapon, six tanks of No.1 Section, C Company, Heavy Tank Battalion. The Mark Is were commanded by Captain A. M. Inglis in C5 Creme de Menthe and supported the 31st (Alberta) Battalion in the successful assault in and around the villages Sugar Factory. |

Storming Pegasus Bridge by David Pentland. River Orne, D-Day, 6th June 1944. Glider troops of Major John Howards' D Company Ox and Bucks Light Infantry having achieved complete surprise, secured the bridge in a matter of minutes. Ever since it has been known as Pegasus Bridge in honour of the airborne forces winged horse emblem. |
Char B at Stonne by David Pentland. France, 15th-17th May 1940. The French offensive at Stonne was of vital importance following the German capture of Sedan. The French could use it as a base from which to launch long-term attacks on the enemy bridgeheads. In this innocuous town, a vicious two-day battle took place in which the Germans came face to face with the premier French tank, the Char B-Bis for the only time. One of these tanks, commanded by Pierre Billotte, proved invulnerable to German anti-tank fire and took 140 hits, and knocked out 13 German tanks. The town changed hands 17 times but ultimately the French failed to hold it. |

The Causeway by David Pentland. Cauqigny, Normandy, 6th June 1944. A mixed force of the just 8 US 82nd Division paratroopers under the command of Lt. Louis Levy found themselves defending the strategic crossing over the flooded Merderet river, against the determined attacks of the German 91st Division. Despite being supported by captured Renault tanks the Panzer Grenadiers assaults were repelled, until at last out of ammunition the paratoopers were forced to retreat. |
