The Shepherd by David Pentland. Orville, Normandy, 20th August 1944. Within days of the death of his friend and commander Obfw. Fendesack, Feldwebel Kurt Knipsel climbed into the last remaining Tiger II of 1st Company 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion as a tank commander. While leading the unit's retreat to the Seine he more than once saved it by knocking out allied tanks at extreme visual range. On the 28th the column reached Pontiose, and safety. |
New Enemy by David Pentland. Kedainiai, Lithuania, 23rd June 1941. Taking part in the opening days of Operation Barbarossa, Hans-Ekkehard Bob recorded his first victory in Russian airspace - a Tupolev SB-2 twin-engined bomber. During this combat action his Me 109F2 was hit by return fire, resulting in a forced landing behind enemy lines. He evaded capture and returned to his unit 2 days later. This was his 22nd victory. |
Tribute to the 617 Sqn Dambusters Crew of Lancaster AJ-N by David Pentland. The image shows Lancaster AJ-N pulling away after its successful breach of the Eder dam. Alongside is the portrait of AJ-N pilot Plt Off L J Knight. This aircraft was the third aircraft to make the tricky attack on the Eder dam. Despite the approach being made difficult by the terrain, AJ-N successfully breached the Eder dam with its bomb, and returned home safely. Fight for Hill 42, East Prussia, 15th March 1945 by David Pentland. A Soviet attack with 18 Sherman tanks and infantry on Hill 42 was halted by a few Stug IVs of Leutnant Heinrich Kohlers 3rd Battery 210 Stumgeschutz Abteilung. Within a matter of minutes 15 enemy tanks were destroyed, 6 by Kohler himself. |
Zemke's First Fan by David Pentland. On the 12th of May 1944, Col. Hubert Zemke tried his new fan tactic, designed to engage Luftwaffe fighters. Unfortunately on this occasion his aircraft was bounced by German ace Major Gunther Rall in his ME109 G-6AS, and escaped only by sending his P47-D Thunderbolt into a gut wrenching dive. |
Winter Offensive, Ardennes Forest, Germany, December 1944 by David Pentland. Jagdpanther self propelled 88mm anti-tank guns of Heavy Anti-tank Battalion 519 attached to 6th SS Panzer Army during the ill fated Ardennes offensive. Only the 1st company commanded by Hautmann Erwin Kressmann took part in the campaign. |
Battle of Tanga by David Pentland Schulztruppen and Askaris, Tanga, Tanzania 3rd-5th November 1914. Also known as the "Battle of the Bees", this was the first major engagement of the East African campaign. The British Indian Expeditonary Force's invasion of the port of Tanga failed, defeated by the smaller German force of Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. |

The second aircraft to attack the target, the aircraft was hit by flak, and its bomb bounced over the dam. Caught in the blast from its own bomb, the aircraft crashed soon after passing over the dam, with just two of the crew surviving. Feldwebel Johann Muller - Tigers to the Front by David Pentland. Lake Ladoga, Leningrad 13th January 1943. Feldwebel Muller of 1st Company, Heavy Tank battalion 502, was mentioned in dispatches for his actions in the Second Battle of Lake Ladoga. During the Soviet offensive he accounted for some 25 enemy tanks and by the end of the war he had destroyed 50. |

Turning Point by David Pentland. 6th August 1945, Col. Paul Tibbets puts his aircraft, Enola Gay, into a violent turn to evade the blast of the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This marked a turning point in the war and history. |
Night of Strong Winds by David Pentland. Berlin, Germany, 24th March 1944. While taking part in what was to be the last major RAF bombing raid on the German capital, Avro Lancaster AS-C of 166 Squadron was unlucky to have both port engines hit by flak. As the crew prepared to bale out, the aircraft again came under fire, this time by an enemy nightfighter. Knocked unconscious by one of the fighters shells, mid gunner Sgt. W.H. Burnell was trapped in the doomed bomber as it fell to the ground from 25,000 ft. Unbelievably he survived and apart from bruising his only injury was a gashed head from the stray shell. |

Strike For Gela, Sicily, 11th June 1943 by David Pentland. Tiger I tanks of 2 Kompanie/ Schwere Panzer Abteilung 504, attached to Panzer Division Herman Goring, launch their attack on the main US 7th Army landing beach at Gela, on the first day of Operation Husky. Despite the fact that the Herman Goring troops were untried in battle it was only the devastating effect of allied naval gunfire that stopped them reaching and probably destroying the beach head. |
